I was born in London in 1952. Went to school at Christ's Hospital School, Horsham. Trained as a teacher at Loughborough College of Education, married Geraldine in 1974. We have three children, Joshua ('78) Samuel ('81) and Tamsin ('84). Geraldine is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and works for the NHS with children, adolescents and families.

I had a number of jobs before I was ordained in 1987:-

  • St George's Crypt (a night hostel for the homeless)
  • Administrator and roadie for the singer Adrian Snell.
  • Care assistant at a children's assessment centre.
  • I trained and worked as a probation officer.
  • As a lay member of staff of St Matthias Church, Leeds
  • I trained for ordination at Oak Hill College, London.
  • Served a curacy at St Stephen's with St Aidan's, Acomb, York.
  • Worked as a prison chaplain for seven years.
  • Was appointed vicar of Clifton in 1998.

In my youth I was passionate about all sport, and played rugby for England U19's. I have played the guitar since my late teens and have released two albums of music about prison life. I still write music and play in worship. I have recently taken up drawing and painting as a relaxation.

I was brought up in a Christian home, and learnt about Jesus. Later I realised that knowing about him was not the same as knowing him. I invited Jesus to forgive me and come into my heart and life, and to baptise me with the Holy Spirit. My faith grew whilst part of a local church, where I was able to be released into more responsibility and leadership.

When I was appointed vicar of Clifton the Lord gave me this verse: 'You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit - fruit that will last.' (John 15:16). I have a passion for people to discover the life-changing message of Jesus and be baptised in the Spirit. I want people to be set free and empowered to minister in his name.
